In 2017, the Office of Economic Development (OED) made a concerted effort to boost our social media presence. We realized that while a newsletter was a great way to recap our monthly activities, it wasn’t really giving our stakeholders up-to-date information on the programs and events currently happening.
OED’s Facebook and Twitter pages are a great way to find out real-time information about business activity and economic development in the City. In the last year alone our Facebook followers have increased by 64%. Our most recent post shared a press release from the Draftsman Hotel on West Main Street, which will be opening soon and adding 150 rooms to the City’s hotel room inventory.
We launched our Made In Charlottesville program a year ago with the aim of helping to promote the creative businesses in the City. The program has its own website, and by sharing it on social media and connecting to the followers of local businesses, it has helped the program get off to a quick start. According to socialpilot.co, visual content is 40% more likely to get shared on social media. Just this year, we added an Instagram page and have definitely found this to be true. In the two months since we started the account, we have over 900 followers.
Additionally, you can follow our Downtown Job Center to find out about current program recruitment, job fairs and area job openings. Recent posts included information about an Open House we hosted at Greenstone on 5th Community Center where residents could learn about upcoming training programs, meet with representatives from the Job Center about employment opportunities, and learn about upcoming job fairs.

- On Friday, March 23rd, eight individuals graduated from the 8th GO Driver cohort. For the first time, the City of Charlottesville partnered with Albemarle County to fund the participation of four County residents in the program. All eight graduates were hired by Charlottesville Area Transit, City Pupil Transportation, or Albemarle County Public Schools and began work on Monday, March 26th. Another GO Driver is being planned for mid-May. For more information, contact the Downtown Job Center at 434-970-3933.
- The Charlottesville Community Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, May 9th from 10am to 3pm at John Paul Jones Arena. This is the 10th anniversary of the Job Fair, which has grown significantly over the years. Given the low unemployment rate, it is anticipated that up to 100 employers from all industries will be in attendance. For more information, visit www.charlottesville.org/jobfair.
- Made In Charlottesville held its first-ever Member Meetup at Cardboard Safari this month. It was an opportunity for the local business owners to get to know each other, discuss their successes and challenges and to talk about future collaborations. It was also a great opportunity for the businesses to learn more about the services our department offers.
